The work

About our ponds

A pond is a big project, and most folks call us when they've got a soggy bottom or a spring they want to make use of. You might be wanting to water livestock, stock it with fish, or just have a peaceful spot to sit by. Whatever the reason, the ground needs to be read right before a bucket ever touches it.

We start by walking the site and checking the soil. Clay holds water well; sandy ground drains fast and needs a liner or a clay core. We strip the topsoil, then dig down to the depth you need, shaping the banks as we go. The dirt we pull out gets compacted into the dam or spread on your place, and we make sure the bottom is level.

Every pond job is different. The size of the pond, how much water you need, and the lay of the land all change how long it takes and what it costs. A steep slope means more cut and fill. Wet weather can slow us down and make the ground sloppy. Access for the machine matters too, and whether we can spread the spoil or have to haul it.

On the day, we show up with the excavator and get to work. We keep an eye on what's around the pond, like trees and fences, and we keep the site tidy as we go. You'll need to make sure we can get to the site and that there are no buried pipes or cables where we're digging. When we're done, we leave the banks shaped and the spoil sorted.

After we finish, the pond needs time to fill. Depending on your water source, it might take a while before it's at its full level. We'll talk to you about how to manage the banks and what to do if the water level drops in a dry spell. The ground around the pond will settle, so you might want to seed it to keep the banks from washing.

If you're thinking about a pond, the best thing to do is give us a call and we'll come out and look at your ground. We'll talk about what you want, check the soil and the water source, and give you a straight answer on what's possible. We'll also tell you what to expect for time and cost, so you can decide if it's right for you.

Soil compaction

A pond leaks when the bottom isn't compacted right. We work the clay in lifts and pack it down so the water stays where it belongs.

Bank slope

Steep banks cave in and make it hard to get out. We cut them back at a safe angle, so you can walk in and out without trouble.

Our 4-step ponds process

01

Site walk

We come out and look at your ground, check the soil type, and find the best spot for the pond. We also check how you'll get water into it.

02

Stripping topsoil

The top layer of dirt is full of roots and organic matter. We strip it off and set it aside, so it doesn't end up in the pond bottom.

03

Digging and shaping

We dig down to the depth you need, shaping the bottom and the banks as we go. The spoil gets compacted into the dam or spread on your land.

04

Finishing up

We smooth the banks, make sure the slope is right, and clean up the site. You're left with a pond that's ready to fill and settle.

Why Dads Excavations for ponds

  • Right shape

A pond that's shaped right holds water and looks natural. We cut the banks at a safe angle and put a shallow shelf in for wildlife, so it works for years.

  • No leaks

Water staying in the pond comes down to how the bottom is compacted. We take the time to pack the clay properly, so you don't end up with a mud hole.

  • Clean finish

We don't leave a mess behind. The spoil dirt is spread or hauled off, and the banks are left tidy, so you can enjoy the pond without cleaning up after us.
